About

Hello! Im Nolan, an 20 year old Server Computing student currently attending the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Hi! I'm Nolan Trapp, a systems-oriented software engineer with a focus on secure infrastructure, real-time data visualization, and automation at scale. My work bridges backend architecture, frontend usability, and operational resilience β€” guided by a principle that technology should anticipate failure, not just handle it.
I have a strong foundation in full-stack development, with a particular emphasis on Node.js, Vue.js, and PostgreSQL. My experience includes building secure, self-hosted applications that integrate with cloud services like AWS and Cloudflare, as well as creating interactive tools that enhance user engagement with complex data sets.

Two of my most meaningful projects are:
πŸ›‘ SSLynx – a secure, self-hosted platform for monitoring SSL certificates and sending expiration alerts. It's built as both a SaaS-ready web UI and a standalone open-source Node.js app. The platform is designed with automation, scalability, and visibility in mind β€” running within a VPC, connected via Cloudflare Tunnel, and supporting .env-driven secrets, SQLite for fast storage, and email-based alerting. SSLynx is actively deployed across environments (dev, UAT, prod) and is a core part of my internal service monitoring suite.
πŸš‡ MBTA Tools – a suite of interactive transit tools built on the GTFS v3 + real-time API, designed to simplify how riders and engineers interact with subway system data. These tools visualize live train movement using Leaflet.js, show per-stop arrivals, track alerts and service disruptions, and recommend optimal routes using real-time conditions. They’re built with Vue.js, powered by a PostgreSQL backend and live auto-refreshing logic, and structured for future API integrations and historical data storage.
Beyond these, I’ve worked on authentication layers using Keycloak, secure API key management systems, broadcast-grade media plugins, and simulated financial exchanges to study order flow and algorithmic trading effects. I approach engineering with a bias toward clarity, testability, and fail-safe design, whether it's a CLI utility or a distributed service.

Outside of coding, I serve as the Chief Engineer for WITR-FM 89.7, mentor for FIRST Robotics teams, and hold a private pilot license β€” all of which reinforce my belief that precision, communication, and failure recovery matter everywhere.

Summary

Nolan Trapp

Systems-focused software engineer with deep hands-on experience across full-stack development, real-time data systems, backend automation, and secure infrastructure. Known for delivering high-resilience web platforms, APIs, and developer tools. Currently pursuing a B.Sc. in Computing and Information Technologies at RIT, with a growing portfolio of technical leadership and research-grade work.

My work blends backend architecture, open-source software, and frontend UX for system-critical apps. Key highlights include:

  • Lead developer of SSLynx – a SaaS SSL certificate monitoring platform with alerting, database-backed history, and custom web UI; hosted via Cloudflare tunnels in a secure VPC.
  • Creator of multiple MBTA GTFS-RT apps – real-time subway visualization tools, disruption analyzers, and route optimizers built with Leaflet.js, Vue.js, and REST APIs.
  • Builder of an open-source Fintech API Sandbox with mock banking endpoints, PostgreSQL integration, Keycloak authentication, and Docker-based deployment – designed for student and bootcamp learning.
  • Developer of a multi-tiered open-source status page system for API/service monitoring with secure backend ingestion, real-time frontend updates, and historical uptime visualization.
  • Authored simulation models for a stock exchange matching engine to evaluate execution latency differences between traditional and algorithmically-delayed exchanges (NYSE vs. CoreX).
  • Frequent contributor to backend systems using Node.js, Express, SQLite/PostgreSQL, and Docker, with frontend experience in Vue.js, Bootstrap, and plain JavaScript.
  • Experience with enterprise-grade security practices from internships at Northrop Grumman (Cyber/Systems) and Vestmark Inc. (Fintech APIs, production tooling).
  • Holds a private pilot license and G1000 avionics experience, supporting strong procedural thinking and attention to detail under pressure.

I'm driven by building meaningful tools that empower users, inform decisions, and perform reliably at scale β€” especially at the intersection of security, infrastructure, and usability.
